The loyal Lion knights of the King have found the evil Dragon knight’s secret prison and some of their missing comrades! In the fight to free the captured knight the Dragon knight has gotten on his horse and the other is flinging rocks over the walls with the catapult. Using the ballista, the Lion knight will try to batter down the gates and use the chaos to free his friend.

The LEGO 7187 Escape from Dragon’s Prison was released in July 2011 and is part of the LEGO Kingdoms collection. With 185 pieces in the set, and a recommended builder age range of 6-12, this is a good set for most builders. This set is relatively small with relatively few complex pieces, and being full of excitement and adventure, is a good set for older builders, who will be able to assemble it themselves without too many problems. Younger builders might need a little more help, but the set will be loads of fun for them regardless.

The two opposing sides in the LEGO Kingdoms world are the brave red and white Lion knights, loyal to the king, and the evil green and black Dragon knights. The main building included in this set is the prison, owned and controlled by the Dragon knights. The prison building displays the same colors and coat of arms on shields above the entrance. The prison has two large towers, one at each end of the large, functioning gate in the center. The towers are designed for defense, with plenty of room on top of each tower to place one of the minifigures included in the set. At the base of the prison towers there are two cells, one with a heavily armored door and one with a traditional cell door. These cells can be used to detain captured knights or hold other items. The attacking Lion knight has his own machine of war though. The Lion knights, who have come to attack the prison tower and rescue prisoners trapped inside, have come armed with a ballista, a wheeled missile launcher that can be used to fire at the tower and its defenders, battering down the doors and freeing all the prisoners.

There are four LEGO mini figures included in this set, one Dragon knight, one Elite Dragon Knight and two Lion knights. All of the LEGO minifigure knights are dressed in armor, but the Elite Dragon knight has a full helmet and plate armor. All of the knight have various weapons at their disposal, such as swords, crossbows and spears. The other item in the set is a black horse, wearing coverings with the colors of the Dragon knights and horned armor to do more damage when it charges.

While the set will be more fun when put with the other LEGO Kingdoms sets, but it can still be a lot of fun by itself. With four knights and several war machines to use, chaos will ensue and adventures will be had! Will the lone Lion be able to break into the prison, or will he be driven back by the evil Dragon knights?

One of the most fun sets in the recent release in the Prince of Persia range is the Ostrich Race set, LEGO 7570. This set came out in 2010 and is one of the smaller sets in the range, with 169 pieces and a retail price of $20. It features the characters that fans of the Prince of Persia video games and movies will be familiar with and is a great fun set for kids of all ages.

In this set the hero of the Prince of Persia series, Dastan, is taking on one of the Sheik’s jockeys in an ostrich race. This closely follows the plot of the movie, where Dastan is trapped by Sheik Amar and forced to race against one of the skilled jockeys, while the Sheik and others gamble on the results of the race. There are minor differences with the plot of the movie, in that in this LEGO set the characters actually race while sitting on the ostriches.

The main part of the set is the racing stables where the ostriches stay while not racing and where the figures can watch the races. There is a tall tower piece, where the Sheik can watch the racing action from his balcony, which is decorated with red and gold flags. Down below, there is a weapons rack where the jockeys and other participants in the races can store their spears, whips and other weapons while riding the ostriches. Before the ostriches start their race they are held in pens with moveable gates. Once the Sheikh gives the signal, the gates fly open and they’re off! The ostriches zoom off down the race course with Dastan and the jockey clinging onto their backs, but who will win the race? That’s for you to decide and creating different race tracks around the set and around other LEGO sets is great fun for kids of all ages.

There are three LEGO mini figures included in this set, apart from the animals. Dastan is the hero of the Prince of Persia series and the mini figure included in this set is unusual in that his expression can be changed by moving his head around. He also has his special crossed swords on his back and unlike the other Dastan figures included in other sets in the Prince of Persia range, this Dastan mini figure is bare chested. The sheikh figure is wearing expensive looking beige robes, and has a matching turban. The final figure in the set is the Sheikh’s jockey, who is wearing brown and beige clothing and has a hat on. The most unusual pieces in the set are the ostriches, which aren’t found in any other LEGO sets. This means that Ostrich Race will be very popular with collectors who are looking for something a little bit different from the norm. The ostriches are taller than the regular mini figures and their legs move. There is space on ostrich’s back to fix on a jockey. There’s also a small scorpion which adds to the hot atmosphere of the desert.

Our hero, Dastan, has to run the gauntlet of numerous obstacles such as spinning blade wheels, swinging swords and trap doors to reach the evil Nizam before he uses the Dagger to release the Sands of Time. The 7572 The Quest Against Time, allows you to recreate the exciting climax of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time movie and is packed full of exciting and interesting traps, items and tricks. Released in April 2010, this 506-piece set is recommended for builders age 7 to 12, but as it offers such a lot of interactivity and adventure that will make it popular with children and adults of all ages. Including two Daggers of Time (one as a spare), the cave where the final confrontation takes place and four minifigures (Dastan, Princess Tarmina, Nizam and Zolm, the Hassansin Leader), this is one action packed set!

It’s up to you to decide as you play with this very detailed and complex LEGO set. The main part of the set falls into two pieces. Both pieces are flat, and form a sort of corridor which Dastan has to move along to get to the Sands of Time. The first obstacle that Dastan has to navigate past is a large spinning blade that moves up and down easily. Once he’s passed that, it’s on to a spinning obstacle on the ground, which needs to be jumped over to avoid the vicious spikes. The swinging sword will then be in your face and you’re still only half way to the Sands of Time! The second half of the set is taller, and Dastan will need to use all of his agility and parkour skill to scale up the tower to the Sands. He’ll need to be careful of the spikes meant to impale those who aren’t good climbers. Once the Sands have been reached, all Dastan has to do is plunge his sword into the sand and the quest is complete!

There are several very fun features to this set, the first of which is the light up bricks which activate when the dagger is plunged into them. The menacing gate architecture could make any minifigure think twice about entering the cave, but the bold must press on if they are to make it through the traps. The booby traps and obstacles that Dastan has to pass through to get to the Sands of Time are very unusual for a LEGO kit and would be great fun to play with. The four minifigures included with this set are the central characters in the Prince of Persia story. Our hero Dastan, carries twin swords on his back and is dressed in Arabia garb exactly like in the movie. Princess Tamina has a flowing white cape and Arabian clothes as well, with a braided hair piece. The wicked villain Nizam wears a long ornate gold and purple coat and is ready to glare down any who gets in his way. Zolm, the leader of the Hassansins, carries pit vipers as weapons. He wears a large turban and a black cloak. All mini figures are very detailed, with amazing facial expressions and hairpieces.

As the set is large, the mini figures can be placed anywhere around the tower and corridor, allowing for lots of different ways to play with the set and stories to be created. This set has quite a different feel from the other Prince of Persia sets which are colored differently and set in marketplaces, so would be great as a standalone purchase. Will Dastan make it in time to take back the dagger or will Nizam succeed in his evil plot to take over the world? Only you can decide, so get building!

The Alamut marketplace, a bazaar where you get many items not seen anywhere else: rare fruits, special vegetables, men fighting through the market place...wait, men fighting through the marketplace?

Nizam, soon to betray the Persian King, wanted the dagger, and so set the attack on the city. Asoka, loyal guard of Princess Tamina, was entrusted with the dagger to get it out of the city and away from Nizam, who wished to get the time changing dagger. Dastan fought Asoka during the siege of Almaut, ended up wounding the man and taking the dagger. Rushing through the streets the Asoka and Dastan fight and knock over vendor’s stands while they try to gain possession of the dagger.

7571 Fight for the Dagger is one of the larger sets in the LEGO Prince of Persia collection, and for all the action takes place in the Alamut marketplace, it has to be. Dastan has cut the dagger off Asoka’s belt and is using it against him, but will Asoka be able to snatch it back in time or will the booby traps in the marketplace stop him? Although this LEGO set doesn’t mirror exactly what happens in the movie, it’s a very fun set which offers a good range of minifigures and different things to play with in the marketplace. Including the marketplace, a vendor’s stand and chart, camel figure and the marketplace’s tower and walkway to fight on.

The vendor’s stand is little more than a large table, but the cart allows a minifigure to push goods though the city streets easily. Jewels, fruits and fish are among the many things that you can find at the vendor’s stand. One of the really fun pieces in this set is the camel, which is unusual in LEGO sets and makes its first appearance in this set. Remarkably tall, the animal stands nearly twice as tall as the average minifigure, but still has the horse-style riding saddle. These saddles can be equipped with a special harness to allow the camel to carry buckets of things for market or boxes of supplies for long journeys. There is even a stand to tie him up when you need to take a break from riding.

The walkway and tower are the impressive parts of the set. Though they are simply background in the movie, this building adds to the Arabian nature of the set. The stairs can be treacherous, dropping away under your feet, and the balconies can be made to collapse as well. The tower piece is large and square, with plenty of room to place a couple of the mini figures inside. On top of the tower there is a golden dome, which really gives the set a Middle Eastern flavor. Though Tamina wasn’t actually present at the fight, she is shown to be watching from the tower, another inaccuracy, but one that might make this fight even more interesting.

There are four minifigures in this set, not including the camel. The four figures are Princess Tamina, wearing her white fabric cape, the solider Asoka wearing his gold breastplate, new silver helmet with plume, the generic market seller with a white turban, and our hero, Dastan. Dastan has his crossed swords on his back as in the other sets and these can be removed and placed in the mini figure’s hands while in the heat of battle. All of the mini figures are very detailed and there is no duplication with each mini figure being completely different.

The set contains 258 pieces and the recommended for builders age 7 to 12. Most builders should be able to handle the challenges despite the complex traps. While it definitely may be used phenomenally with other sets, those it does have merit in its own right and makes an excellent adventure set. Released in April 2010, make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to step into the action of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time! Or, make sure you get the Dagger of Time so you can go back in time to pick one up!

Prince of Persia is one of the most successful video games and movie franchises ever, and now that LEGO have introduced a range of sets based on the games and the movie, everyone can create their own desert scenes and play with the characters and situations they are familiar with. One of the smaller sets in the Prince of Persia range is set the LEGO 7569 Desert Attack.

The main benefit of this set is that it is offered at the great value price of $10. It’s a small set, but would be a fantastic addition to the larger sets in the Prince of Persia range. All of the Prince of Persia sets are desert based and this is no different. The wicked Hassansins are lurking in their lair, deep in the sand dunes to plan their next attack. Our hero, Dastan, however has other ideas and is poised to attack their hideout and scupper their evil plans! The Hassansins are heavily armed though, and will fight to the death to defend their base and their treasure.

This set is really easy to put together and even the youngest children should manage to do it without adult help. The main feature of the set is the four mini figures which are included. These are the main hero of the Prince of Persia series, called Destan, a skeleton, and the two Hassansins. Destan is a very detailed mini figure and has two long swords which attach to his back when not being used. The two bad guys are Ghazab and Setam. Both are wearing black turbans to shield their heads from the scorching desert heat. Ghazab is also known as the Hatchet Hassansin as he is wielding a vicious looking two headed hatchet. The other evil Hassansin is Setam, who has the really unusual weapon of spike arms. He has a wicked sneer on his face and the scars make him look even more menacing. The final mini figure is the skeleton, who isn’t armed, but has a funny grin on his face. The role of the skeleton in this set isn’t properly explained but it can be assumed it is a previous victim of the Hassansins or perhaps a prisoner who has perished in the scorching desert heat. To complete the desert theme, the other pieces in the set include a red snake, a small scorpion and a black horse belonging to the Hassansins which can be ridden around by any of the various mini figures, including the skeleton.

There isn’t much to build in this set which means that the items can be used flexibly and to create lots of different scenes. The camp area has a couple of long spears sticking out of the ground which are great to use as additional weapons for the mini figures, and also serve as protection for the treasure which the Hassansins are trying to protect. The treasure is hidden in a camouflaged box, but Dastan should easily be brave and sneaky enough to get past the guards and seize the precious jewels hidden underground.

Prince of Persia is one of the most successful video games franchises of all time and there was no great surprise when Disney bought up the rights to make a movie based on the game. LEGO and Disney have worked together on products in the past for both the LEGO and Duplo ranges, and with Prince of Persia they saw the opportunity to make some fantastic sets which are great fun. The largest set in the Prince of Persia range is the LEGO 7573, the Battle of Alamut.

This set is large, with 821 pieces, and smaller children will need some help putting it all together. Once it’s assembled though, LEGO enthusiasts of all ages will be delighted with the Middle Eastern exotic scene which the battle set offers. The main story line in the Prince of Persia movie is around the Prince stealing the magical Dagger of Time and this story is hidden deep in the city. Will the city’s defenses be enough to keep the Prince out? Many of the defensive features of the Alamut city seen in the movie are also replicated in this set. One of the best features and the one which offers the most possibility for playing are the rock launching catapults. You can fire rocks and other small LEGO pieces at the Prince and his attacking troops, knocking them flat if your aim is accurate enough. If the attackers manage to get past the rock launching catapults, then perhaps they will be thwarted by the other cannons and falling debris which also feature in the movie. The building is booby trapped and has hidden doorways and has sliding poles which can help figures climb up, before being pulled away making the figure fall. The main character in the movie, Dastan, can walk on walls and the way that the set has been designed means that he can be placed around the walls to make his getaway from the vicious guards and their scary spears. The whole fortress is incredibly detailed, and even after it's been played with for a whole, there will always be something that little bit different or something you hadn't spotted before. The detail and the size of the set, along with the mini figures and the overall design of the set makes it well worth the $80 price tag.

The best thing about the way this set is designed is the flexibility. It falls into two main parts, which are the fortress itself, and the surrounding walls. The walls can be removed from the fortress very quickly and easily and this means that the set can be used in lots of different ways. When flattened out, the walls piece goes from being horseshoe shaped into being a longer continuous wall. The other main feature of the set is the seven mini figures which are included. All of the main characters from the movie, such as the heroic Dastan and the evil Nizam, as well as soldiers, a beautiful princess and even a camel. The camel is particularly cool as there is space on its back to allow one of the mini figures to ride on it.

King’s Carriage Ambush is part of the most recent release of sets from the LEGO Kingdoms Range. It is a medium sized set and retails at around $40. The set has 286 pieces and four LEGO minifigures. The set is suitable for children aged 6 to 12, and as the main items in the set are reasonably small, most children should be able to put it together unassisted.

LEGO Kingdoms is a medieval fantasy world filled with brave knights, castles, dragons and unicorns. In this world, the brave Lion knights of the king battle the wicked Dragon knights and defend villages and the castle against their attacks. In this set, it is the King’s carriage which has come under attack by a group of Dragon knights while it is transporting a chest of treasure through the forest. The set works equally well as a standalone set, or as an addition to some of the other Kingdoms sets in the range. The main item included in the kit is the carriage itself, which is drawn by two impressive unicorns. The carriage is in the King’s colors of red and white, and has golden wheels and flags on the top. The carriage is large enough to fit at least one mini figure inside, and there is space at the front for the coach driver as well.

At first glance, the two trees included in the set may appear to be just for decoration, but they are far more than that. The Dragon knights have used the trees to make an ambush for the carriage, so one tree is actually disguising a hammer which can be used to attack any passing vehicle, and the other has a flick shooter which can shoot missiles. One of the trees also has a large spider web which can be used to trap any unwary knights who are passing
by.

One of the main attractions of this set is the mini figures which are included in the set. The main figure included is the King, who is impressively detailed. He is wearing red and white clothing, and has a red cap around his neck. He carries a long golden sword and is also wearing a large golden head dress which is half crown, half helmet. The King figure is very  collectable and highly desirable. As well as the king, there are three knight figures included in the set, one Lion knight and one Dragon knight. The Lion knight is also dressed in red and white, and carries a whip as part of his role as coach driver. The two Dragon knights are black and green, and are carrying spears and axes. Both are in full armor, with helmets which can be easily removed and swapped around if desired. The unicorns which are pulling the coach are white and wearing silver hoods. Their heads can be moved up and down and they can be easily detached from the coach itself. The set also includes smaller accessories such as a treasure chest, and its contents of golden goblets, coins and precious jewels.

LEGO set 7189 Mill Village Raid is one of the largest sets in the most recent 2011 release as part of the hugely successful LEGO Kingdoms range. The original Kingdoms sets featured a medieval military world with knights from two opposing sides, castles and weaponry such as swords, catapults and axes. The new release builds on this theme and includes other buildings to enable a whole village to be constructed. Mill Village Raid is a large set comprising of 663 pieces and six LEGO mini figures. It is aimed at an age range of 7 to 14 years, and as the main buildings are fairly complicated, children in the lower end of the age range would require some assistance to put the set together. The retail price of Mill Village Raid is $70.

The Mill Village Raid consists of two main buildings, and many accessories including mini figures. The concept of the set is that the village is under attack from the evil Dragon knights, and the villagers are coming together to defend their village from the invaders. The main building in the set is a large barn, which is 7 inches tall and 5 long when built. The barn has heavy looking doors which can be opened and closed to allow storage of animals and vehicles inside. There is also a hay loft which is accessed by a ladder, a pulley system to move crops up to the top of the barn for storage and many other details such as pitchfork and flowers for decoration. The way the barn has been designed is such that it can be easily split in half and opened out to make an alternative play arrangement.

The roofs of both of the buildings in the set have been designed so that they can be flipped open to allow access for play. The other main item in the set is a windmill. Although smaller than the barn, the windmill features moving blades and it is plenty large enough to put mini figures or crops inside. There are six mini figures included in the set, three attacking Dragon knights and three villagers. The Dragon knights are in full armor, and are wielding shields, axes and crossbows. The villagers, two male and one female figure, are not armed but are carrying pitchforks and buckets. As well as the human inhabitants of the village, there are a number of animals included in the set and these are a horse, pig, two goats and three chickens.

This set is very flexible in that it can be used either alone or with any of the other sets in the Kingdoms range. The Mill Village Raid set alone has numerous features and interesting aspects which would allow for many different scenarios to be created without the need for any of the other sets in the Kingdoms range. Alongside the other sets in the range, it makes an interesting addition for a more village setting. The mini figures and animals included in the set can also be used in many different ways, with or without other Kingdoms sets.

When buying a LEGO Kingdoms set, you enter the world of myth, magic, dragons, castles, princesses, knights and brave soldiers. This highly successful product range was launched by LEGO in 2010, and it was an instant hit with everyone who wanted to enter into a medieval fantasy world with their LEGO models. One of the smaller kits in terms of both pieces and size in the range is set number 7953, the Court Jester. This set has just 22 pieces and includes only one LEGO mini figure. The set is suitable for children aged 5 to 12, and given that the set itself is small and simple, children of any age should be able to construct it themselves without help from an adult. At a price of $4, the Court Jester makes a great addition to other LEGO Kingdoms sets.

As this set is one of the smallest in the Kingdoms range, it is unlikely that this will be the only set from the range purchased. It is much more likely that it will be purchased as an accessory for other Kindgoms sets. However, if it is the only set from the range that someone owns, it is still a fun and unique sort of set to own. The set falls into two main pieces. Firstly, you get the court jester mini figure, which is traditionally dressed in red and white to tone in with the rest of the Lion knights and the Court. The jester also comes with the traditional red and white jester hat with the bobbles on the end. The most unusual feature about the jester however is that he has a double sided head. On one side the face is sad and shedding a tear, on the other he is grinning and happy. The clever design of the hat ensures that one face is always hidden, allowing you to choose the expression the jester has.

In medieval times the role of the jester was to entertain the King, Queen and the rest of the royal court in the castle. A jester would tell stories, sing, dance or juggle. The LEGO jester can do all of this and more, and comes with his own little stage where he can perform. The stage has a brown base but is mainly red and white, with gold and red flags on the top. The jester has his own white and blue juggling balls which he can use for his entertaining. The stage is small enough that it can be easily placed in most of the rooms of the larger castle sets such as the King’s Castle (set 7946). It would also be possible to place the jester outside any of the other models, and of course the mini figure itself can be used with any of the accessories, armor or weapons which come with the other mini figures in the range. This LEGO set is truly something a little different, and it seems likely that the jester will become one of the must have pieces in years to come, and therefore highly collectable.

The medieval fantasy land as created by the LEGO Kingdoms sets has proved to be a very popular concept since its launch last year, and the large range of sets on the market allow enthusiasts to build their own medieval world, complete with dragons, LEGO mini figures, brave knights, beautiful princesses, weaponry and armor. The sets in the Kingdoms release range from the massive and complicated such as the Kings Castle set, to much smaller releases, designed to be an impulse buy at pocket money prices. One of these smaller sets is set number 7955, the Wizard. There are only 19 pieces in this set, and it retails at the price of $4. The set is very simple and easy to construct, and even children at the lower end of the recommended 5-12 age range would be able to put this set together on their own. In fact, the construction of the set is so straightforward that it would be simple to put together even without the instructions, just by following the pictures on the box.

The set contains the wizard figure, a book stand holding the wizard’s spell book and a bench where the wizard can concoct his spells and practice his potion making. As this set is one of the smallest in the Kingdoms range, it is designed to be used in conjunction with some of the other sets in the range. The wizard and his work equipment would look great placed in any of the other sets, and is small enough that it could be easily incorporated into almost any other kit. It is of course possible to play with this set independently and having a powerful, magical wizard allows huge opportunities for all sorts of scenarios and creative play.

The main attraction of the set is the wizard mini figure. In Kingdoms the mini figures belong to one of two opposing sides; the red and white figures are loyal to the King, whereas the green and black mini figures take the side of the wicked Dragon knights. As the wizard is wearing a green robe and hat, it is safe to assume he is of the wicked persuasion. His facial expression is menacing, and he come accessorized with his wizard’s staff or large wand. The book stand is only slightly smaller than the wizard himself, and holds his spell book, detailing the work of the evil Dragon knights. The construction of the book stand allows the book to be tilted up and down into various positions.

The potion bench is large enough to hold not only a strange looking green dragon creature but two of the wizard’s colorful flasks, containing potions prepared by the wizard. This set is small, but the wizard is a very popular character and essential to the medieval fantasy world that LEGO are trying to create with their Kingdoms range. The detailing in the set is excellent, and given the very cheap retail price for this product, it is likely to  be very popular and become a collectors’ item in years to come.
