Part of the LEGO Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade collection, the LEGO 7197 Venice Canal Chase was released in 2009. Featuring four LEGO minifigures, a collapsible Venetian arching bridge, a secret manhole hideaway, two buoys and two boats, this is one action packed set! The LEGO mini figures included in this set are Indiana Jones, Dr. Elsa Schneider, Kazim and another Grail Guardian.
The boats are nearly exact replicas from the ones used in the watery chase scene in the movie: small boats with brown trim, the short windshields and bumpers on the side. The only difference between the two is that one of the boats has tan paneling and a black flag on the end, while the other has brown paneling and a red flag. Though these boats aren’t large, only 6.75 inches (17.1cm) long, they can fit up to four people comfortably, though only two of those minifigures will have actual seats. On top of all the details, the boats also feature the damages from the movie. One of the boats features a detachable end and the other features an exploding engine, both of which can be triggered by pressing their special releases. The construction of these boats is so solid that the destructible features won’t deploy if you just play a little rough with the set.
The archway is a very nice reproduction of the bridges that the two boats raced around under. Complete with a nice, ornate railing this really is a nice piece of LEGO scenery. The secret manhole cover even has enough room for a LEGO minifigure to comfortably slide down and get out of harms way. Another section of the walkway, opposite the manhole cover, can be made to collapse by pressing down too hard on the back of the planks that hold it together, another ingenious escape device. Two blue and white buoys that the boats can either cut down or weave around are also included in the set's scenery.
Indiana Jones wears that classy grey suit and black tie from the movie, although he still comes with his traditional hat. Dr. Elsa Schneider is wearing the business suit and grey slacks from the movie, while her blonde hair is styled a completely unique way for a minifigure. The doctor also has two faces, a surprised look and a smile. Kazim and another of the Grail guardians are perfect matches to the movie, wearing the same grey-stripped suits and white ties, with the awesome mustaches from the movie. The two men even have the dark red cylinder hats and are armed with a sub-machine gun and a regular handgun from the movie as well.
An impressively well designed set, it is also not terribly complicated to build. Recommended by LEGO for builders aged 7 to 14, this set is within the reach of many younger builders. The destructible features won’t be too complex for their skills and this set will be a good intermediate type set for those who are moving up to try some of the more complex LEGO sets.
